Cabin with stovepipe

This is similar to the first cabin I made, with a couple differences. On this one, the upper part of the side walls is made of vertical flat toothpicks. Also, it has a stovepipe chimney instead of a stone chimney.

Miner's shack

Made entirely of flat toothpicks. This is intended to be a simple, no frills structure, as were the shacks used by miners in the mining towns of the Old West.

The town

Here's the whole town, complete with the outlaws. Ideally, the bridge and grist mill would be farther to the left, however. They imply a stream running through the middle of the town, but they fit in better here in the space available. (A couple other buildings have been made later, since this picture was taken.)

Gallows

This is a working model. Pull the lever on the left, and the trap doors in the platform drop open. The mechanism to open the trap doors is also made of toothpicks. There are 13 steps leading up to the platform.

Covered bridge

My biggest project so far, but it's not entirely made of toothpicks. The framework, the deck of the bridge, and the approaches are made of flat sandwich picks. The supports under the approaches are made of square toothpicks. The rest is made of flat toothpicks. The piers are made of shale.

Windmill

The wheel moves in a breeze, and with the vane (tail) can rotate any direction to face into the breeze. The wood base is there to add weight to the bottom, and helps prevent it from tipping over.

Train station and tracks

A friend gave me a pack of bamboo shish-kabob skewers, and asked me to see what I could do with them. This is the result. The roof and platform are made out of flat and square toothpicks. This was a one-time project, and after this one, I went back to toothpicks. The tracks were a separate project, made from square toothpicks.

Livery stable and corral

This is actually a set of three separate projects - the stable, the fence, and the watering trough. The stable is divided into two stalls. The fence gate moves on its hinges. The latch can also be moved, and can lock the gate in a closed position if desired. The horses came from a friend who correctly thought that their size would fit well with the town.

Grist mill

The water wheel turns on its axle. The structure at the right holds the axle in place. The wood base is there to make room for the wheel to move.

Well

This is made of square toothpicks - even the bucket. Not everything could be made out of toothpicks and still look right, so the handle on the bucket is a piece of thread, and the rope is a piece of string.

Saloon

The doors swing open and closed on their hinges. The window on the side is made to resemble the kind that outlaws were thrown through during barroom brawls.

Sheriff's office

 

Three kinds of toothpicks were used to make this building. The signboard is made of flat toothpicks with a border of square toothpicks. The bars in the windows are made of round toothpicks.

Outhouses

The one-holer has a roll of toilet paper on the left wall, and the two-holer has a stack of old newspapers in the corner.

House with porch rails

This house is made entirely of square toothpicks. Turned out to be stronger than expected... it fell on a hard floor once, and it bounced! The only damage, at the top corners of the roof, is barely visible.

Hotel

The steps to the second floor, on the right side, are made of square toothpicks. There is also a floor made of flat toothpicks on the second floor, visible through the second-floor windows and door.

Church

The cross on the steeple is a separate part, and can be detached for storage to prevent it from breaking off. The doors and the other crosses are made of flat toothpicks.

General store

The door is made out of flat toothpicks, with a display window next to it. The side window is similar to the windows on the log cabin.

Log cabin

This is one of my first projects. The pile of firewood is made of scraps left over when I made the windows (not shown) and doorway. The chimney, added later, is made out of limestone gravel.
